The Idea.....

 

The idea of a wireless network within the town of Hydra (and not only...) was born last summer. It seemed as a dream in the beginning and it was only a matter of discussion and a way of passing our endless hours of watch in Greek Navy.
But our duties in the Greek navy were about to finish and we stayed only in words!!
At that point this kind of technology seemed too distant for us.
Generally, everything wireless is something that fascinates us as Radioamateurs and that was also the case with wireless Networks which gained our trust and we begun experimenting with them. having a licence of an Amateur Radio Station we have made also many experiments in data transfering through low frequencies, HF, VHF and UHF either phonetic or digital but with a slow speed of transmission.
After all these the fisrt attempt was made in August of 2006 with quite satisfying results and our speed counter has shown a pick of 13MBPS in a distance of 1km approximately. Automatically we had created the first bridge between Kala Pigadia and Agios Thanasis. Having this bridge as a standart and stengthening it time by time , it has become finally the backbone of SW8KLJ-Michalis and SV8JGL-Nikolas network.

We have informed all of our friends that finally we are ready! The first who responded was Lefteris, who although he is very young he kept up with the spirit and not only did he become a client, but he accepted also to host Access Point #2 Agios Kwstantinos and to reinforce the backbone of Hydra WIFI. This gave us the ability to seperate the areas of the port apart from the areas of Kamini and the other west areas that are covered by the AP of Michalis. The 2 AP are bridged with another link in 2,4 Ghz having as a future plan to substitute this link with a relevant one in 5Ghz for a higher backbone speed. So, Lefteris deserves a huge BRAVO. Keep up the good work!

Some may wonder what is the whole concept of Hydra wireless Net....

We emphasize....

1.It is non profitable, non commercial and it is not uploaded by any Municipality or Association
2. we are open to anyone who might wants to get connected and contribute to its development.The APs are locked for safety reasons. Once you get connected you are given all keys. One e-mail to us is enough. Or you can 'catch' us drinking our coffee in Hydra Port, or simple give us a call!

3.Free internet is not distributed but we can request for this in the future after a cooperation of all users.

 

We are open to any suggestion for further advancement and more services.

One of our future objectives is the Hydra's wireless Net linkage to the Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network. We hope that we will achieve this (we believe it won't take long).

Wireless Network is based on 802.11b(11Mbps) and 802.11g(54Mbps) technology transmitting to 2,4 Ghz. Since all the machines that transmit to these frequencies are made to work with very low power, antennas with as high as possible gain are used (15db and above). this means that the more qualitative antennas we use the more we upgrade the between us communication.
In the future we will provide a link with News that refer to our network and to anything new it is constructed.
